Map of Central SiteOur site focuses on the tarnished San Antonio River, north of downtown, parallelling Broadway and St. Mary’s, between IH35 and IH37. The area we were offered followed the San Antonio River north of downtown to the freeways and south on South Alamo toward the missions. We chose to focus on the site north that is wrapped east, north and west by IH 37 and IH 35 , and south to the proposed Brooklyn street dam. It is ripe for development, with many abandoned sites that already have their urban infrastructures in place. Once the current massive flood control, recirculating tunnel project is complete, the water levels here will be far more predictable. Like an octopus, this site reaches out to link south to downtown, north to the parks, museums and affluent residential, east and west to educational, medical and residential. As a transferable concept, we wanted to investigate ways to cross the freeways, which tend to isolate areas of downtown. After developing our river loop, we notice there could be a similar opportunity at the south site around the Flour Mill and Blue Star Art Complex.
