    INTRODUCTIONS

Tom Brereton welcomed everyone to the meeting and asked those present to introduce themselves and to explain the origin of their interest in the task force's work.

    PRESENTATION BY CITY STAFF

Nancy Dean and Tony Bosmans briefed the task force and answered questions on the City's organizational structure, programs, capabilities and current plans related to technology. Their presentation will be posted to the task force web site (http://www.salsa.net/metronet/cityshow/ ).

    EXPLANATION OF MANDATE

Tom Brereton explained the origin and development of the task force's mandate and discussed the rationale for each element (http://www.salsa.net/metronet/draft2.html). He stressed the role that the task force members had played in elaborating their own "initial tasks" and the philosophy expressed in the "procedural mandates."

    PRESENTATION OF PROPOSED SUBCOMMITTEES

Tom Brereton presented a proposed structure of subcommittees to organize and carry out the task force's work. Each member was asked to join a subcommittee, because most of the actual work of the task force will be carried on by these subcommittees. The final subcommittee memberships will be distributed through the listserv.

    GENERAL DISCUSSION

Several members expressed their enthusiasm for the task force's assignment and explained what they might hope to accomplish. Members were asked to think about possible sources of funding and in-kind contributions for pilot and demonstration projects, since the task force has no direct city budget allocation. Some members suggested we could reduce the burden of attending meetings and increase participation by using virtual meetings technology.
