Lamenting the Number of People Killed in Iraq

Human life is sacred and precious. Though we may not have the actual names and faces of people killed, faces will remind us that these are human beings not just numbers. “If you want peace, work for justice” as Pope Paul VI said. We pray that we may work together for a just world and to preserve life. The tears of lamentation for suffering and evil are the rain that waters the garden of hope.

Classes, humanitarian and religious groups, and individuals are invited to cover 8 ½ by 11 sheets of paper with faces of people Through the upper body might be included, try basically to focus on faces. Do not include scenes, symbols, flags, etc., focus on human faces. If you would be able to get actual faces of those killed, you might put a name and a hometown right under the face. “GOD WEEPS” for both Coalition deaths and Iraqi deaths.

On the back of the sheet, please write how many faces are there. Please include the name, address, phone, and e-mail of the person or group submitting this so that we may give you credit in the list of participants and let you know when and where the finished mural can be seen. Possibly it could be loaned to groups. During the spring university semester, each week members of Religious Studies classes will check web sites and try to get the numbers of persons killed.

The growing mural, will be pinned on the walls outside of classroom B03 in the basement of the Fine Arts Building, right on the corner or Broadway and Hildebrand at the University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas, USA. You may leave sheets of faces to be added in the box there or mail them to Sister Martha Ann Kirk, 4301 Broadway #77, San Antonio, Texas 78209. Pages of faces will also be accepted by e-mail, send to kirk@universe.uiwtx.edu as attachments in JPG format.

We hope to document “GOD WEEPS,” A VISUAL PRAYER FOR PEACE as the mural grows, to post it on the web, and invite prayerful comments and reflections.
