Covenant for Homes without Violence 1999

As leaders of the Religious Community, we firmly state that our homes should be places where each person is safe; where love, not fear, binds a family together. Growing awareness and increasing resources have given more women the courage to report the violence that they and their children have suffered at the hands of their partners. In San Antonio and other South Texas areas, we of many faiths, beliefs, theologies, and religions, share a common desire to put an end to domestic violence and to promote, safety, healing, and well-being for all families.

We now challenge all of our religious leaders, lay leaders and members to a call to action:

  • To show concern for all families and human relationships by openly condemning domestic violence.

  • To educate people in our religious tradition about the resources available to address domestic violence.

  • To stand and act against violence in all its forms including physical, psychological, and emotional abuse.

  • To develop partnerships and resources to provide educational, spiritual, and technical support on behalf of families seeking help.

  • To enhance the capacity of the faith community to empower and protect the victims of domestic violence, and to hold the abusers accountable.

  • To foster healing and wholeness in our communities.

This is our covenant. These are our goals. Let us live this covenant to bring about a better San Antonio, Bexar County, and South Texas for our families.
