Breaking the Cycle of Violence Through Circles of Peace

The peaceCENTER supports the learning of peace in our lives and the demonstration of peace within our community. Rather than being an advocate for a particular agenda, the peaceCENTER hopes to incite inclusive discussions and actions, leading toward peace. These are some of the issues currently playing a central role in the peaceCENTER.

Celebrating DiversityThe by-laws of the peaceCENTER state that "This Corporation shall not discriminate against any person on account of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age or national origin." Beyond its pledge not to discriminate, the peaceCENTER celebrates the diversity of this community and encourages everyone to come to the table to discuss issues of vital importance to our community.
Creative Nonviolence SightingsRather than dwell on the violence that exists in society, the peaceCENTER prefers to celebrate the peacemaking that occurs in our community every day. By learning from the people here in San Antonio who are making peace we can all learn how to spread it throughout our own lives, our families, our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools -- and the entire world!
Economic JusticeThe peaceCENTER is located in a downtown area of San Antonio where homeless people congregate. We see it as part of our mission to minister to these neighbors. Starting in the Spring of 1999, the peaceCENTER will host noontime nondenominational worship services for those in the community. A long-term goal is to start a street newspaper. This section of the web site covers all issues concerning economic justice, in our city, our country, our world. Look here to find information about economic sanctions, third-world debt forgiveness, welfare reform and homelessness.
Knowing HomeThe Knowing Home Collaboration is an appreciation of the history, environment, and cultures of South Central Texas. The peaceCENTER suspects that knowing more about the places where we live will help us make peace in this place and this time. Our first project is to learn more about the neighborhood where the peaceCENTER is located, Irish Flats.
Simply San AntonioSIMPLY San Antonio is a network connecting groups and individuals with resources for simplifying our lives through sharing practical tools, resources, and inspiring models to build a self-sustaining connected community through dialogue, peaceCENTER publications and the net. A series of community gatherings will utilize real-life examples to stimulate dialogue and interaction to help ourselves and our communities to live with more choices, increase our freedom from consumerism, decrease our negative impact on the environment, find and use resources for simple living and promote economic justice.
Death Penalty VigilsThe peaceCENTER holds vigils on days when Texas prisoners are scheduled to be executed, and was a partner is the Texas Journey of Hope and the National Conference, Organizing the Religious Community Against the Death Penalty. We hold study groups on the book Dead Man Walking. This section contains alerts of upcoming vigils and other information about the death penalty.
Visualize PeaceAs practitioners of creative nonviolence, the peaceCENTER is experimenting with ways to visualize peace. If we can picture peace in our families, in our workplaces, our neighborhoods and schools, in this city, this country, this world, in this time and for all time, maybe we can come closer to making peace. This section of the website contains pictures of the peace, including art and other forms of creative expression.
War - Can it be just? This section covers discussion about war and the military, including past, present and future conflicts, issues concerning military service, pacifism and just war, nuclear disarmament and arms trading. Those interested in economic sanctions and transition from a military to a civilian economy may also want to keep abreast of this site's section on economic justice.
