Irish Flats
           Simms Fire Equipment Company, Inc.
Fire TruckThis fire truck was built by Simms Fire Equipment Company and delivered to the Nordheim Fire Department in 1926. Simms started making firefighting equipment in 1916. All of their trucks were custom built and individually designed. The Simms told us that many Texas municipalities had volunteer fire departments. They held barbecues to raise money to buy a chassis and had it delivered to Simms. They then held more barbecues to raise more money to have Simms convert their chassis into a fire truck. Even more barbecues were held to pay for the custom painting - all done by hand, and in real gold leaf. A final barbecue was held to celebrate the delivery of the truck.

Floor plan of SimmsThis is what the peaceCENTER's building looked like when it was used as offices and storage space for Simms. The large warehouse in the rear was torn down to make a parking lot for First Presbyterian Church. Many of the Irish Flats houses were converted to commercial use. The floor plan to the right shows how the space was used. The area outlined in red was the original house, that we now occupy.
