Pledge for Peace - Today's News

As part of the Decade for Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World, UNESCO has developed a Pledge for Peace. The six parts are: Respect all Life; Reject Violence; Share With Others; Listen to Understand; Preserve the Planet and Rediscover Solidarity.

Age Group: All

Time Required: one hour to ongoing.

Preparation:

  • Print a copy of the Pledge for Peace, available online at:
    www.salsa.net/peace/nobellet.html.

  • Copy (or tape) each pledge and its description to the top of a large sheet of paper. Underneath, draw a large T. The left column should be labeled, "keeping the pledge." Label the right column "breaking the pledge."

  • Bring in a copy of the newspaper. If the group is large, bring in several papers and/or news magazines, making sure that there is enough current events material so that each student has reasonable access.

Exercise: If the group is large, you might decide to break them into smaller groups of 3-5 people.

Review the pledge, perhaps reading it out loud.

Ask the students go through the newspaper, finding examples that illustrate the pledge being kept today and the pledge being broken today. Have them cut out the article or headline and tape or glue it to the appropriate column of the pledge. If they think of other examples - including personal examples - that are not in the paper they can write them in.

Encourage discussion of the items as they are added to the list.

This can be done as a one-time project, or the pledge pages can be left on display and added to as students discover new examples from the news.
