Peace Symbols - Peace is in My Hands

Time Required: About 1 hour.

Preparation:

• Print a copy of the Dictionary of Peace Symbols, available online at:
  www.salsa.net/peace/symbol/index.html.
  Make a copy for each student.

• Print a copy of the Pledge for Peace for each student, available online at:
  www.salsa.net/peace/nobellet.html or in Adobe Acrobat portable document format, more suitable for printing, at www.salsa.net/peace/pledge.pdf.

Exercise:

• As a group, discuss the peace symbols described in the dictionary. What is a symbol? Why do these symbolize peace? How are they used in the world?

• The slogan of the United Nations Peace Pledge is, "Peace is in Your Hands." Discuss what this means.

• Have each student trace his or her hand on a piece of paper. Decorate this hand with peace symbols, either those adapted from the peace symbol dictionary or of the student's own invention.

These peace symbols can be displayed in the room or could be used as the cover for a Peace Pledge Diary.
