  • Some of the documents are available in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document format. These files will have a file extension of .pdf (for example, www.salsa.net/peace/sharp.pdf (3 pages). We provide them like this because this format prints is best for printing: you will get uniform results no matter what Internet browser you use, or whatever word processing program or special fonts are installed on your computer. To use these files, however, you must have a copy of the free Adobe Acrobat Reader installed.

Get Acrobat ReaderYou can download the program directly from the Adobe Web Site.

  • In some cases we offer you the opportunity to download files from our Web server. Whenever you download files there is a possibility that you could infect your computer with a virus; this is an especialy urgent concern when using Miscrosoft Office Suite documents (such as Word and Excel files.) Although we periodically virus-check our files, a prudent person might take time to check again.

  • Along the same lines, when you open a file that your web browser cannot handle on its own (for example, a word processing file or spreadsheet) a pop-up window may appear asking if you prefer to save the file to disk (your hard drive) or open it using the program that generated it or a compatible program. It is always wiser to save it to disk and virus check it prior to opening it. Always.

  • You can save any graphic from this Web site by hovering your cursor over the graphic and RIGHT clicking on it. A pop-up menu will have the option "save picture" (MS Internet Explorer) or "save image" (Netscape Communicator.) Select this option, and your file directory will appear. Note the name of the file and the folder to which you saved it so that you can find it again. The graphics displayed on the Web pages will either be in a GIF or JPG format. Once saves, they can be incorporated into other applications, such as a word processing document or slide show. Because the are formatted for on screen viewing, the resolution may crumble if enlarged for use in a printed document.

  • A few of the pages on this Web site use pop-up windows that do not have the expected browser tool bar that permits you to print a page. One example is the biographies of world peacemakers, at http://www.salsa.net/peace/faces/index.html. If you want to print such a page, RIGHT click on the link to the page prior to opening it. A drop-down menu will offer the option, "open in new window." Select this and a second copy of your browser will open, displaying all the normal tool bars and options.

  • Feel free to copy any of these files for nonprofit classroom use. If you want to refer to them on your own Web site, we would prefer that you link to our site rather than reproduce them on your own.
