When asked what he would do if he knew that the world would end tomorrow, Martin Luther said, "I would plant a tree!"

On September 3, 1999, the peaceCENTER planted a Tree of Peace to mark the beginning of the Decade for the Culture of Nonviolence.
The Tree symbolizes hope for a peaceful world. The streamers on the tree bear the names of San Antonio children who have been killed by acts of violence this year. Each person was invited to help plant a tree by adding a shovelful of dirt, and pouring on a cup of water, symbolizing the tears of the children. There was an article about the ceremony in Saturday's Express-News.
Guests were also invited to sign the new peaceCENTER poster, which had its public debut at this ceremony.

An image of the poster is online. It was based on art submitted for the Picture the Peaces contest in the Spring of this year.

Guests also had a first-look at the peaceCENTER's Great Peace March, a timeline of peace and justice history. This timeline consists of 65 events and is availble as a traveling display. More information is online.
