Volunteer Technology Mentors Needed!
A community network is being built in our region. The reason? To bridge the information and digital divide that exists in our community and communities throughout the nation. In San Antonio alone, over 40 percent of residents do not have access to a computer at home or at work. On the West side, the numbers spike to over 60 per cent. This is, after all, the electronic century. Creating opportunities for the underserved to connect to these new technologies and the educational, economic and social opportunities that follow will bridge this burgeoning divide. While access to technology is definately a part of the community network plan, the more critical component is talent to help teach the uninitiated how to use the new technologies. That's what a community network is all about.
That's where ISOC members come in. Your interest in technology is only exceeded by your advanced technological skills. We are seeking your help to serve as virtual mentors to new technology users. At this point, our greatest knowledge is only about what is needed. We are looking to you to help us shape the solution.Mary Ellen Burns
